I recently discovered a serious error in my tree. I had the wrong parents attached to Charles Wesley Martin. I and many others had connected George and Rebecca Martin as his parents based on records of their son Charles W. Martin born in a nearby county in the same year. When I noticed two different 1880 censuses attached to my Charles – one with his new wife Leah Knaggs and the other in Harrison Co., single living with parents, I realized the Harrison Co. Charles was not my Charles.

I finally figured out who his parents were – Thomas B. Martin and Catharine A., born 1829 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, but can’t find anything beyond them. I did find DNA matches to distant cousins from Charles’ siblings (which helped me figure out who his parents were), but even their trees don’t go past Thomas and Catharine.

I am working on a chapter about how I figured out who his parents really were that I will post soon.

Do you have any information about our Martin ancestors in Preston and Taylor Counties, West Virginia? Do you have photos of Charles, his siblings, etc? Records like family bibles that list his parents or siblings?
