Tapes for Grandpa

In 1972 my grandfather, Homer Henry Wagner, was in the hospital after a heart attack. I wasn't allowed to visit him because I was only 8. So I recorded two reel to reel tapes for him to listen to.  I sang songs, told jokes, played cello, and recited poetry. Diana Thornton at Cheat Lake camp with grandfather Homer Henry Wagner: My mom, Lois, helped me and sang along with me on some of them. Diana…

Research and Biographies

Genealogy is more than just names and dates. It is about your family's story. I can turn your data into narrative and images that tell your story. I've been doing "genealogy" since I was 10, but until I wrote my first biography, it was just thousands people who had no form, no context, no connection, no humanity. Even I glaze over looking at my tree. So I started writing chapters for each of my ancestors…

S.S. Columbia sailing [video]

A short video of the Columbia, the ship Rev. William Weiler came to the in May 1891 on, filmed only 3 years later in June 1902. It shows the ship as it gets under way in Hoboken, with waving passengers. I suspect the scene would have been similar when it left Hamburg. Bonine, R. 23 and Me DNA results

I just got my DNA results from 23 and Me. I already took the test, which is usually what I use to connect to cousins since that's where my tree is. But the 23 and Me test looks at the MtDNA which is the direct Maternal line. The test just shows cousins, whereas the MtDNA (or Y-DNA if you're male) is much more accurate since the Y or Mtdna gets passed to son/daughter almost intact…

Did the Vespers and the Fryhofers know each other?

Recently I connected with Susan Vesper, a 5th cousin. She alerted me to an error in my Ancestry tree and we've been trading data and photos ever since. When I added Susan to my tree, I did a little more research on her lineage. She descends from Johann Wilhelm Vesper, my ggg grandfather Frederick Vesper's brother. Three of Johann Wilhelm's sons came to America in the late 1800s and they lived for a few years…

Christmas Past

PLEASE EMAIL ME YOUR MEMORIES AND PHOTOS OF CHRISTMAS WHEN YOU WERE A KID OR OLD PICS FROM YOUR PARENTS/GRANDPARENTS FOR THE ONLINE COLLECTION. My Wagner family sure knew how to do Christmas. There was always a tree, lots of presents, and usually a model train set at my grandparents house. Living up north in Pittsburgh, there was usually snow. I was lucky to have my grandparents (Homer Wagner and Louise Weiler) nearby to spoil…
